You have a hole in your eyes!

I would like to share this experiment that my father explained me when I was in the college with you.

  • Put your left hand in front of your left eye in such a way you cannot see with your left eye.

  • Approach your head close to the screen up to approximately 8 inches.

  • Fix the blue point while looking at the black spot in your peripheral vision.

  • Slowly move backward your head of the screen until seeing the black spot disappearing (always fixing the blue point).

On my 19 inches screen, it happens when my eyes are between 12.5 and 14.5 inches of the screen.

If you want to make the experiment with the left eye, you must fix the black spot and see the blue point disappearing.

How does it work?

Simply because the disappearing point is just behind the optical nerve that doesn’t contain visual receivers. So there’s an empty area that the brain fills with what the other eye sees (this zone is visible with the other eye). But if the other eye is closed, the brain uses the surrounding color (in our example, the white).

If the experiment succeeded, let me know with a comment. Thank you.
